#2: Can you enroll in Medicare at any time?

In order to enroll in Medicare, you must meet certain qualifications. There are also specific enrollment periods that must be adhered to in order to avoid financial penalties. Most qualify for Medicare before their 65th birthday, but you can also gain eligibility through qualified disabilities and medical conditions. Whether for age (65) or disability, you will have a 7-month window known as the Initial Enrollment Period.

#5: Are Medicare Supplement Plans and Advantage Plans the Same?

Medicare supplement plans (Medigap) cover the gaps in Medicare (deductibles & coinsurance). They are more expensive than advantage plans but are accepted wherever Medicare is accepted. Medicare Advantage plans are considerably less expensive than Medigap plans but operate like an HMO or PPO where individuals are encouraged to use in-network providers. A person cannot have a Medigap and Medicare Advantage plan simultaneously.

#3: Is Medicare is Provided Solely from the Federal Government?

Medicare parts A and B are provided through the federal government, but they don't cover everything and come with deductibles and co-pays. Many opt to purchase Medicare Advantage Plans from private insurance companies for added coverage, benefits, and aid with deductibles and co-pays.

#6: What is the Difference Between Medicare and Medicaid?

Medicare and Medicaid are both goverment programs that can offer medical coverage, but those who qualify differ. Medicare is offered to those 65 and older or those who have qualifying medical conditions. Medicaid is offered to those with limited income and resources. It is possible to qualify for both; these individuals are considered "dual eligible".
